Who is Eligible for Medicare in Alabama?

Do you live in Dothan or Enterprise and are in need of a health insurance plan?

Well, you can qualify for Medicare in Alabama if you meet the general eligibility requirements.

To enroll in Medicare, you must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent legal resident for at least five years. You can also qualify for Medicare in Alabama due to age, disability benefits, or certain health conditions. In this article, we’ll explain the categories of people eligible for Medicare in Alabama.

Medicare Eligibility in Alabama

A large percentage of people qualify for Medicare due to age. You may be eligible for Medicare if you are 65 years old or older. If you fall in this category, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B during the Initial Enrollment Period. Your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after you turn 65. This is also the most recommended period to enroll in because if you delay your initial enrollment, you could face late enrollment penalties and coverage gaps.

If you paid up to 40 quarters of Medicare taxes while you worked, you qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A. Under Medicare Part A, you get coverage for inpatient hospital services such as skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, home healthcare services, and other services. If you have not paid the necessary Medicare taxes, you can also enroll in Medicare Part A but you will have to pay a premium. You can also enroll in Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period. Part B provides coverage for services such as durable medical equipment, preventive screenings, ambulance rides, and doctor’s visits.

People who receive disability benefits from Social Security also qualify for Medicare even when under 65. If you have received Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare on the 25th month.

If you reside in Alabama and you have been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, you are eligible to receive Medicare the month you start getting disability benefits. You can also qualify for Medicare if you have End-Stage Renal Disease and you need a kidney transplant or regular dialysis. Your coverage will start after your first dialysis and will stop if you no longer need dialysis or have had a kidney transplant.

Other Medicare Options

If you have Original Medicare, you can enroll in other Medicare parts such as Part C, Part D, or Medicare Supplement plans. To enroll in Part C, which is an alternative option to Original Medicare, you must be enrolled in Original Medicare. The same goes for enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan.

For Part D, you can be enrolled in either Part A or B to get this coverage. However, you can also get Part D coverage as an added benefit with a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.
