Medicare Advantage

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Medicare Part C) is a plan designed for beneficiaries of Part A and Part B to receive more Medicare benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans are dispensed by private insurance companies that are accredited by Medicare.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

  • HMO Plans: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans only offer coverage if you receive coverage within their provided networks. You may also be required to choose a PCP and obtain referrals to see specialists. Premiums tend to be lower with HMOs.
  • PPO Plans: Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans provide coverage for both in-network and out-of-network services, but you may pay more for out-of-network services and premiums. You also do not need a PCP or require referrals.
  • SNP Plans: Special Needs Plans (SNP) are designed to cater to those with specific diseases and illnesses. You may be required to choose a PCP and obtain referrals for specialists.
  • PFFS Plans: Private-Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans determine how much they will pay for Medicare-covered services and how much you will pay. Your costs will typically be lower if you receive care within the plan’s network.
  • MSA Plans: Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans consist of two parts: a high deductible plan and a savings account. Once you meet the yearly deductible, the plan will begin to cover your costs. The plan will also deposit money into the account, which you can use to pay your healthcare costs before the deductible is met.

    Disadvantages

    • It may restrict your freedom of choice for health care providers:
      • Generally, Medicare Advantage allows you to visit any facility that recognizes Medicare and get the same grade of Medicare provisions for covered services. Conversely, Medicare Advantage plans are more limited by way of provider networks. If you go out of network, your policy may not cater to your medical costs, or your costs may not affect your out-of-pocket maximum.
    • Coverage for some services may need doctor referrals and plan approvals:
      • Medicare Advantage plans are careful to avoid the violation of healthcare through various guiles. It does this by providing authorization for inpatient care, outpatient care, medical facilities, and some complex procedures beforehand. Most times, Medicare Advantage policies need your principal care doctor’s referral to see specialists before covering service expenses.
    • They have specific service zones:
      • Most Medicare Advantage plans have webs of providers. To join, one must reside in the Medicare Advantage plan’s service zone. If you split your time between homes in different areas, this criterion may be difficult to satisfy.

Overall, Medicare Advantage plans may provide more benefits, but the downside is that you must adhere to Medicare Advantage Plan guidelines to obtain the benefits for covered services.
