Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans, also called Medigap, are private insurance policies that enhance coverage for Original Medicare. These insurance amplifiers provide supplementary health insurance coverage through 10 different plans, each designated by a letter, and offered by private insurers.

All Medicare Supplement Insurance plans in 2020 are standardized and labeled A through N. This means that each plan type offers the same basic coverage irrespective of the insurance provider that issues it. For instance, the basic benefits in a Plan D policy issued by BlueCross BlueShield must be the same with a Plan D policy offered by Mutual of Omaha. However, while the plan is standardized, charges vary from insurer to insurer.

The purpose of Medicare Supplement Plans

Medigap provides upgraded coverage for Original Medicare with all or part of the expenses that Original Medicare doesn’t cover like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Here are other benefits of Medigap:

Medicare Supplement Plans reduce financial pressure

Analysts agree that considering Original Medicare without supplemental insurance could prove to be costly. While the Part A premium is free for many beneficiaries, it includes a $1,408 deductible per benefit period in 2020. Part B comes with a low $198 deductible in 2020, with the beneficiary essentially paying 20% of the remaining charges.

With the 20% deductible in effect, there is no limit to the price that a patient can pay out-of-pocket. For instance, if a patient suffers cardiac arrest, requires multiple operations and hospice visits, they could become bankrupt overnight.

Supplement Plans reduce hassles

When an individual initially enrolls in Medicare Part B, they are allowed six months to purchase a Medigap plan without the insurance provider digging into their medical history to decide whether to provide coverage. When that window shuts, they would have to undergo medical underwriting involving a series of questions.

    Who needs Medicare Supplement Insurance?

People consider Medigap policies for the following reasons:

    • They travel abroad frequently and would like insurance coverage for emergency care (an amenity that may not be provided by Part A and Part B alone). Some Medigap plans provide foreign travel cover (most notably Plan C, Plan D, Plan F, Plan G, Plan M, and Plan N). These plans essentially pay 80% of emergency medical costs covered for members outside the U.S.
    • They receive numerous hospice treatment during the year.
    • They have doctor visits frequently or require medical response often.
